Megatherium was one of the largest land mammals to ever live. It was the size of an elefant and weighed as much as.
The claws of its feet were so large that the ground sloth could not walk on his feet rather he walked on the sides of his feet. It fed on plants and could stand up to 6m high on its hind legs to reach further up into trees. Its strong jaw muscles allowed it to shear right through branches. Like modern day sloths megatherium may have spent a lot of time sleeping to help digest its food.
Some scientists have suggested - even if the notion is highly controversial - that megatherium was a omnivore. Some dental and skeleton features indicate that it may have been a successful hunter or at least a scavenger. Megatherium could deliver blows that would drive its claws right into the flesh of unsuspecting animals.
